The Courage To Speak Your Truth

“The ability to speak your truth is the bulwark against hell” – Prof Jordan Peterson

Reflecting on my journey, I’ve come to realize that one of the greatest disservices any man can do to himself (and his peers) is to speak un-truth.

I’m not talking about tiny white lies, like saying you love that weird dish your mom makes and is really proud of, even though you aren’t a big fan…

I’m talking about compromising your own core values in order to avoid confrontation.

We’re a society of people-pleasers…

Think of all the times you’ve wanted to speak your truth…

To say what you truly think, and to stand up for what you truly value…

As that alarming feeling of ‘this is not right’ arises inside you – what do you do?

In a world of unprecedented conformism and complete disregard for any kind of valor, honor, truth and justice, every single time you refuse to tell a lie, you are lighting the sparks of revolution.

Every single time you step back from affirming what you know in your heart to be true, you’ve lost a part of your individualism.

“Ours is not an age that wants heroes. Ours is an age of envy, in which laziness and self-involvement are the rule. Anyone who tries to shine, who dares stand above the crowd is dragged back down by his lackluster and self- appointed peers.” – King, Warrior, Magician, Lover

But to speak your truth is a courageous act.

To stand above conformity, above the masses lost in quiet desperation, and to fearlessly choose to be you is something that is so rare in this world, and so immeasurably valuable.

No good comes from the crowd.

Good comes from the individual.

And you are at a crossroads in your life.

You’ve felt it for a long time now…

You know you arent living life in accordance with your highest values and that’s why you’ve found yourself here, reading this, with me.

You can either follow the crowd… As you always have… And feel the seeds of discontent grow within you…

Or you can chose to walk your path and be a hero.

I’m inviting you now to be a hero.

Because the truth is ugly…

I talk often about love and beauty and joy and peace but there is a depth of darkness that comes with it, and only those who have the courage to navigate that darkness are the ones who end up breaking free.

Yes – breaking free!

The chains are in your mind but they might as well be made of iron… You’re paralyzed just the same.

And to speak your truth, though it may cost you your reputation, your honor and even your life, is to strike the first fatal blow to those chains…

Because when you curb your speech in order to please others, then you curb your thoughts, of which your speech is merely an extension…

And if you curb your thoughts, then you no longer dictate your worldview, and have lost sight of who you are.

“Those who are attached to personal reward will reap the consequences of their actions: some pleasant, some unpleasant, some mixed. But those who renounce every desire for personal reward go beyond the reach of Karma” – Bhagavad Gita

Whenever you try to shake the world, the world will beat you down for it.

So where does the strength come from to remain unaffected by it?

By being fearlessly you – so much so that you have literally nothing to gain or lose by any action, as you are your own man…

You are the guarantor of your security and your sense of Self is unassailable.

“By sustained effort, one comes to the end of sorrow” – Bhagavad Gita

This leads me to my final thought…

The only journey a man should ever embark on is the one in of shrinking the chasm between who he has been told to be and who he really is.

When that happens, you are essentially free.

You will be hated for it…

But you will be free…

That’s why most people don’t have the courage to break free!

They sure pretend they want it… But ultimately they know they can’t handle the price that needs to be paid.

If you want it… Badly… You feel the aching for freedom within your heart… You have to accept that you will be hated for it, that you will not please everybody.

But you take the first step anyway.

And you take that first step by never compromising when time to speak your truth.

“The world is against me… It wouldn’t be fair otherwise” – unknown

End rant.
